What is forensic science, and what do forensic scientists do?
Forensic science is the application of science when studying various criminal investigations. Forensic scientists will analyse evidence taken by the police from a crime scene, and they will apply their scientific knowledge to aid the authorities in their pursuit of justice.
How do you become a forensic scientist?
In order to become a forensic scientist, you usually require an undergraduate degree in a subject such as chemistry, analytical science or an appropriate biological subject such as biochemistry, biology or molecular biology, or an equivalent qualification. Many forensic scientists will also have a postgraduate degree in one of the aforementioned sciences or forensic science itself.
Where do forensic scientists work?
Typically, a forensic scientist will work with law enforcement officials and agencies and conduct the majority of their work on crime scenes. Many forensic scientists will also search for evidence on crime scenes, helping authorities to make sense of what has happened based on the physical evidence or work in hospitals either.
Job outlook :
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the average salary for a forensic scientist is $58,230 per year. The top 10% of forensic scientists earn more than $97,200. Forensic science technicians who are employed by federal agencies usually receive higher pay. The BLS predicts faster-than-average employment growth of 17% for forensic science technicians between 2016 and 2026. However, since the field is relatively small, candidates should expect significant competition for available jobs and prepare themselves to qualify for available positions.
