Data science is the domain of study that deals with vast volumes of data using modern tools and techniques to find unseen patterns, derive meaningful information, and make business decisions. Data science uses complex machine learning algorithms to build predictive models. A data scientist is an evolution of the business or data analyst role. They have a solid foundation typically in the areas of computer science and applications, modeling, statistics, analytics and maths.


How do you become a data scientist?

Becoming a data scientist typically requires at least a bachelor’s degree in IT, computer science, math, physics or data science, with an additional emphasis on master’s degrees, but securing a job without one is also possible.


Where do data scientists work?

Data scientists are in demand in a multitude of sectors, ranging from working for large tech giants such as Google, IBM and Microsoft, to industries such as pharmaceuticals, communications and finance.


Job outlook:

According to the American Bureau of Labour Statistics, data scientists have an average annual salary from approx. $103,930 to $149,000,and they predict a significant increase in job opportunities due to the dominance of large multi-national corporations and the prevalence of computers and technology in enterprise.
