What Computer Network Architects Do


Computer Network Architects build communication networks. Before they are able to build the network, they must design a layout based on what the network is going to be used for. For example, they could be building a small connection, or they could be building a large connection for an entire business. It is important to note this during the design process to make sure that the network can be used properly. After creating the communication network, they may be asked to monitor it and fix any problems that arise.


According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, computer network architects held 159,300 jobs in 2018. The biggest employer of computer network architects is computer systems design companies. Typically, computer network architects work at these companies in the office for 40 hours per week.


How to Become a Computer Network Architect


To become a computer network architect, at least a bachelor's degree is needed. Some fields to major in to become a computer network architect are computer science, information systems, or computer engineering. A few classes that computer network architects may encounter in college are network security or database design. It can also be beneficial to continue with your education to receive a master's degree in information systems or a related field.


Some skills that computer network architects should strive to have include: analytical skills, interpersonal skills, leadership skills, and organizational skills. They should also be detail-oriented.


Pay and Job Outlook for Computer Network Architects


As stated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average annual salary for computer network architects in 2019 was $112,690. This salary fluctuates based on the industry the computer network architect is employed in. On average, those working with insurance carriers earned the largest amount at $117,720 annually.


In terms of the job outlook, the number of computer network architects employed is expected to grow around 5% from 2018-2028. One reason for this increase is because businesses are expanding their information technology networks, so computer network architects will be required to help build new networks and maintain them. However, cloud computing will hurt computer network architects because business won't need to build their own individual networks.
